You bring up some very valid points.
You mention the Japanese way of "marketing" and how they combine a variety of functions into marketing... or whatever you want to call it! LOL!
Seth Godin has said something similar, the key point being that marketing isn't something you do after the product is created BUT marketing is in the creation of the product itself. In other words everything about the product is done with a marketing view in mind. If the product isn't "marketing friendly" then it isn't worth pursuing according to Seth.
The older and lazier I get the more I agree with that!
In other words, Seth doesn't support the concept of someone just cranking out an ebook on say gardening. This gardening ebook had better be something very unique and easily marketed or it never sees the light of day.
Quite frankly I think most folks are simply whistling through the graveyard when it comes to product development.
