Hi Rod,

Thanks for sharing that! I joined up and had a browse of the web site... I guess you need to be an "approved researcher" (not sure what that is) to see some of the full business plans, but it's interesting that you can see things like some emails that some of these businesses sent to Venture Capital firms seeking funding...!

The site also mentioned that they have a companion web site,

http://www.dotcomarchive.org

where you can read stories of the "dot com" era....

I think we can look back and see what all the mistakes were that were made by many companies in the "dot com" era. That is, too many companies were created to fill a "need" or "desire" that didn't really exist!

Too often, companies were created for the sake of technology - without even thinking too deeply about the market...!

I think so much money was sloshing around that money was being thrown at anything technical-sounding, in the hopes it would turn into another "Netscape"! (When you look back, it was the listing of "Netscape" that really started the dot com boom... Yahoo helped to confirm it!)

And the idea that profits don't matter any more (and that anyone who disagreed just "didn't get it") didn't help either!

Thanks Rod - fascinating stuff! :)

P.S. Obviously, those who thought the internet was just a "fad" were wrong too... We can also look at those which survived and thrived - those which actually helped people do things better. Companies like eBay (buy and sell more efficiently), Amazon (buy and sell books more efficiently), Google (find information more efficiently), Yahoo (which should probably be seen as a "content provider" company, though they are so diverse...) - plus the "smaller guys" who survived too...

Many of those which "survived" are those who mastered direct-response methods of marketing - it's a good approach to take to the internet... :)
