Sandy,
Thanks for sharing that one.
We had covered Frozen Baby Food in the October 13, 2004 issue of The Great Ideas Letter. Though I do like this twist on it.
I do see a growing market for "natural" foods as opposed to the chemicalised food stuffs being foistered onto the market today. And it looks like she is evidence of that.
What I find interesting is how long it took her - 6 years.
I wonder how much sooner she would have had a viable business if she had not concentrated on trying to get her food onto store shelves and, instead, went direct to the consumer - moms and dads with little ones. Such a displays in baby stores, ads in baby newsletters, birth classes, baby boutiques, mothers groups, handing out flyers to mothers she sees with kids in strollers, etc., etc.
I feel that while the story does show that you can achieve something if you keep at it, it is also a downer for a lot of people. Mainly due to how she went about it - food manufacturers and $100,000 in capital to start. To someone wanting to start those two things seem like a unsurmountable obstacle. And so would give up before they start.
Otherwise, though. It shows you don't have to be a multinational food company to get into the market.
My only beef with her product is the ingredients. I am anti-milk so therefore against cheese - and certainly for babies. I am also against flour-based products of any kind - babies will have a hard enough time with high GI low nutrient food without giving it to them when they are babies.
This line in the story scared me..."baby food is free of most preservatives"
So maybe her food isn't as free of stuff as she thinks?
Other than that. Good one.
Oh. And please feel free to share whatever you like on the forum.
